HomeTenshin shoden katori shinto ryu in the PhilippinesSep 20, 2004

Kenjutsu is the method or school of fighting centered around the katana (Japanese sword) as used against other classical weapons of the Japanese warrior. The style of kenjutsu that we are learning is called Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu.

Katori Shinto Ryu is one of the oldest schools of martial arts in Japan, dating back to the days of the samurai more than six hundred years ago. Today, it is considered by the Japanese government as one of the most distinguished of all Japanese martial traditions.

As it is common in most koryu, licenses, rather than rank are awarded to deserving students. These licenses indicate the degree of proficiency and how far in the curriculum a member/student has studied. Permission to teach is given only after reaching a certain level, and only with expres authorization of the headmaster of the ryu.

Katori Shinto Ryu adopts no system for ranking its advocates, nor has it any championship tournaments. Both teachers and trainees are required only to devote themselves to training, and helping each other.

Sugawara Sensei began teaching Katori Shinto Ryu in Manila back in January, 1998. This makes the Philippines the first country in Asia outside of Japan, where Katori was taught.

Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu classes are held every Wednesdays & Saturdays, 7:30-9:30 pm. Our dojo is at the Club Gymnastica, inside the Rizal sports complex, Kapitolyo, Pasig City.
